BIOGRAPHY: McArthur Democrat-Enquirer Newspaper; Vinton County, Ohio; Vinton County's Living Pioneer Series, #149, Published 26 March 1959, "Creola's John McGathey Will Be 82 Years Of Age Easter Sunday, Is Still Working." Information from Biography:
"CREOLA'S JOHN McGATHEY WILL BE 82 YEARS OF AGE EASTER SUNDAY, IS STILL
WORKING.
John McGathey who lives with his son at Creola, will be 82 years of age Easter Sunday. There probably won't be much of a celebration, for John keeps busy around the farm just as he has kept busy all his life.
At 82 years of age his health is good, and he still is capable of a good day's work. He has been a timber-cutter most of his life and that's hard work. This friendly pioneer is a brother of Mrs. Victoria HARDESTY of New Plymouth who was one of our pioneers back in October 1958.
Like his sister, John was born at Carbon Hill in Hocking county, but spent most of his life in Vinton county.
He was born March 29, 1877, the son of William and Rebecca McMANUS McGATHEY. His father was a cavalryman in the Civil War, and his service for four years led to his early death. He enlisted from Jackson county. There were five boys and five girls in the McGATHEY family. John attended school and New Plymouth, and his early teachers included Charles COX and Prof. SISSON and Prof. CLARK.
In 1899, John went to Chillicothe where he worked as a section hand in the Chillicothe yards of what is now the B&O railroad. He then started his career as a timber-cutter and in 1910, went to Dayton where he started working in the Smith and Barney car shops, and later became a street car motorman for 11 years, and also worked at the National Cash Register Company plant. He spent 20 years in Dayton, returning as a timbercutter and worked all over Ohio at that trade. In October, 1899, he married Margaret TAYLOR of McArthur who died seven years ago. They had two children, a daughter who died young, and John Scott McGATHEY, with whom he makes his home at Creola.
He later married Mrs. Mamie SPECHT of Hamden, who died 18 months following the ceremony. Anybody who ever saw John McGATHEY and his son, John, together could never doubt the relationship, as the son, while bigger than his father, is almost an exact duplicate.
John has one grandson, Sergeant John Richard McGATHEY, U.S. Marine Corps, Camp Lejeune, N.C., and three great-grandsons.
During his lifetime he has operated a sawmill, and cut timber in Jeffersonville, and at New Plymouth where he lived for awhile, helped build roads, including the Starr-Union Furnace road, helped build the McArthur Brick Co. plant and worked several years in the machine room there.
'I've moved around a lot, and always worked hard, but have no complaints,' says John McGATHEY.
Now he helps his son on John Scott's 115 acre farm in Swan township, has a garden and is noted for his sweet corn, helps his son feed calves. For hobbies he watches television, listens to the radio, reads the Democrat-Enquirer and the Athens Messenger, and various magazines.
'I've got to keep busy . . . seems like I can't stand just loafing,' says the big, friendly man who will be 82 Easter Sunday.
Like his sister, Mrs. HARDESTY, he remembers his widowed mother tell of early hardships, living in a log cabin in the woods, carrying a torch at night to keep away the bears which were plentiful in Southeastern Ohio in those days and he recalls his mother's tales of how the McMANUS family started to California in the Gold Rush days of 1849, but returned to Vinton county in the Tarr Farm area because of the many hardships encountered. Send John McGATHEY a card on Easter in honor of his birthday.
John McGATHEY and his wife the former Margie TAYLOR McGATHEY were married for 50 years prior to her death. John joined church at New Plymouth where Dr. TAYLOR was the pastor of the Presbyterian church. There were 17 boys in the church between the ages of 17 and 20.
As far as he knows, he is the only living elder of the Presbyterian church at New Plymouth who has held office for 30 years. He has been driving an auto since 1923 and has never had an accident or been arrested or fined."

BIOGRAPHY: McArthur Democrat-Enquirer Newspaper; Vinton County, Ohio; Vinton County's Living Pioneers Series, #139; "Pioneer, Daughter of Civil War Vet, Recalls Days Men Left On Gold Rush."
Information from Biography:
"PIONEER, DAUGHTER OF CIVIL WAR VET, RECALLS DAYS MEN LEFT ON GOLD RUSH.
Mrs. Victoria HARDESTY of New Plymouth, while born at Carbon Hill, has spent most of her life in New Plymouth. She was born Feb. 4, 1879, to William McGATHEY and Rebecca McMANUS McGATHEY, and tells her story in her own words, dictating to a daughter:
'I was married at the age of 23 to Wilmer HARDESTY of Chillicothe. He passed away Feb. 16, 1951. To this union were born eight children: Harry HARDESTY and Ruth LOOMIS of New Plymouth; Sylvester HARDESTY of Bucyrus; Nellie of Logan Route; Helen HOLLAND of Rockbridge; and three sons who died in infancy.
'I have 16 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren, my pride and joy.' 'My husband and I lived a happy life. He was a coal miner and a farmer and a devoted husband and father. In my earlier days I have spent many a day with him on the farm, cultivating corn, making hay, or helping wherever I was needed. I have even made cement walks, and helped build a chicken house, summer kitchen and cellar. I was always by his side, when he was not at public work.
'Now, since I am alone, I have two dogs and a cat to help break the lonliness and then I still have some hobbies. I love to make quilts, quote peotry, and read my Bible. I don't do any crocheting any more as my eyes won't permit it, but when I was younger, I have made many a yard, crocheting dresses and sweaters for the children, and did all my own sewing.
'At an early ag I was taught to go to Sunday school, and to church, where I get the most of my enjoyment yet. At the age of 16 I was given up to die with what was then called consumption, but a good doctor (Dr. FRAMPTON) and the prayers of Christians brought me back to good health again.
'I didn't get much education when I was a child, but I have managed to get by. I can still remember two of my teachers, Will CHERRY and Monroe SAVELY, and a few of my schoolmates: Margie TAYLOR, Addie TAYLOR, Daisy ALLEN, Jenny BARTLETT, Katie and Maggie KREPPEL, Myrtle SOUDERS, Effie CLARK, Hugh HARRIS, Homer ALLEN, Nettie FINNEY. To my recollection, they are all dead except Addie TAYLOR who is now Mrs. Addie POSTON of Lancaster.
'I have seen hardships in my early days. I was raised, by a widowed mother, my father died when I was five. I was one of eight children, five boys and three girls. I have only one living brother now, John McGATHEY of Creola. My father was a Civil War veteran, a Cavalryman for four years, and his service led to his death.
'My mother in her earlier days lived in a log cabin in the woods, as there was not much land cleared then. When they had to go to church, or anyplace at night, they carried torches to keep the bears away, as bears are afraid of bright lights.
'I have heard my mother tell many interesting stories about the Gold Rush . . . how the neighbors were all selling their land and possessions and leaving for California, so grandfather and the boys thought they must have some of the gold too.
'He had a sale, sold his furniture, farming equipment, livestock and kept only what they needed for the overland journey, and that night after the sale the money was piled upon the table from which several hundred dollars were counted out. The women made their dresses then of overall cloth, very heavy with large pockets underneath to carry the family cash. There were several caravans of the McMANUS family who started on the overland trip to California, and in one of these covered wagons, my mother, father, and little brother JEsse were passengers. The family cow was tied to the rear of the wagon, to furnish milk for the little ones while on the journey.
'The motto, or slogan on the wagons read 'California or Bust.' The trip was long and treacherous, with the travelers keeping a keen eye out for Indians, robbers, bears and wild animals day and night.
'The men took turns at night standing guard with their guns. When old Rover growled at night it brought great anxiety and fear to the little company. Winter was coming on, and it was getting unbearably cold. Some of the travelers were sick, and one of my grandfather's best team of horses died, and some of the cattle he had died too, a very discouraging note. The dresses of the women were getting worn and tattered.
'One night after the evening meal was cooked and the fire was being stomped out, one of the bags of money was found near the fire where the pocket had become unsealed, and let it fall.
'As time went on, they encountered many hardships, and started to meet other covered wagon trains, returning with the motto 'Busted' and my grandfather finally gave up and come back to Vinton county, 'busted' too.
'Grandfather and the children settled near Tarr Farm, and my parents later moved near New Plymouth. 'In my long span of years I have seen the Hand of God in all my life. He has been with me, guiding me and protecting me.'"

BIOGRAPHY: McArthur Democrat-Enquirer Newspaper; Vinton County, Ohio; Published April 19, 1956; part of Vinton County's Living Pioneers Series; No. 70.
Information from Biography:
"Because he hated to carry water, Jesse H. McMANIS, now a resident of 315 East Twelfth street, started a career of railroading which extended over a period of 45 years before his retirement in 1940.
Mr. McMANIS was hired as water boy when the railroad section men were laying the rails for the Jackson-Wellston belt line and Hocking Valley branch from Wellston to Jackson.
He got that job because he knew the families along the way, and could get water without trouble, but had to carry it a long distance.
One day, when he spied the foreman, Frank MATTHEWS, close around, young Jesse picked up the hammer and put in some spikes on his own. Matthews saw the youth at work, came up and told him: "Jesse, I think you can drive spikes," and hired him on the spot.
Thus his career of railroading began. Not only did he help lay the rails during his career, but also tore them out when their usefulness was over. As foreman of an extra gang in the 1930's he tore out the branch line which ran from Logan to New Straitsville, when the latter was abandoned, and was also in charge when the line was removed from Beaumont to Hookers, near Columbus. He served as section foreman and extra gang foreman from 1933 to 1940, retiring from the railroad Ocober 31, 1940.
He was born November 3, 1875 in Vinton County, east of Puritan, a son of James and Sarah Jane ERVIN McMANIS. Of his parents family, two brothers and one sister are living. They are Roy McMANIS and Elmer McMANIS, West B Street, Wellston and Mrs. Essie PERRY, Dundas.
Mr. and Mrs. McMANIS were the parents of eleven children, seven of whom are living. They are Mrs. Rhoda CUBBISON, Mrs. Lily ROACH, and Mrs. Emma REED all of Wellston; John McMANIS, Dundas; Burtle McMANIS, Columbus; Mrs. Susan CREGO, Columbus, and James McMANIS, Morral, Ohio.
Following his retirement from the railroad, Mr. McMANIS bought extensive farm property around Dundas, and farmed for about two years, later moving to Wellston. His wife died April 21, 1953, and he lives alone at his residence at 315 East Twelfth Street.
Mr. McMANIS is in fairly good health, except for difficulty in walking. He finds his retirement pleasure in reading and watching television. One of the publications he reads from cover to cover is the Journal of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees in which organization he still retains his membership, his last link with the railroad he served so many years."

Born in a log cabin, one of a family of 14 children, Mrs. Cora BEARD, 81, of Hamden, recalls her early days in Clinton township of Vinton county very well.
'I went to three schools, Hayburn, Eliza, and Hagerty, and in those days we walked to and from school . . . no school buses then' she recalls. She was born Feb. 6, 1883 near Puritan, the daughter of Erastus and Mary Frances HAYBURN JAYJOHN. Her father was a coal miner, and lived to be 92 years of age. BIOGRAPHY: Vinton County Democrat-Enquirer's series of Pioneer Sketches; # 380; Published January 20, 1966.
Information from Biography:
"Mrs. Mary Alice McMANIS, 82, lives at 516 West B. Street, Wellston, which could easily be called 'McMANIS Street'. 'My son, Ernest and his family live on one side of us, my husband's brother, Roy, lives on the other side, and our daughter lives up the street' Mrs. McMANIS says.
Like her husband, Elmer Edgar McMANIS, Mrs. McMANIS is a native of Vinton County. They have been Wellston residents since 1936 when they purchased their present comfortable home.
'My mother, Sarah Ann SEARLS, was a Wellston native and lived here with her parents when the town was founded,' she recalls.
Mr. and Mrs. McMANIS lived in Dundas for many years while Mr. McMANIS worked on the railroad section. He also worked at the brick plants at McArthur and Puritan, is now retired. A native of the Dundas area, he will be 80 May 27, 1966.
Mrs. McMANIS was born Dec., 3, 1883 in a log house in Richland township near Allensville. Her father was a farmer, Perry Andrew WILLIAMS, her mother Sarah Searls WILLIAMS.
She attended Jackson school for one or two winter terms, then went to Darby school near Shiloh, and finished at the Tripp school near Hamden.
'Shed COX (Milton S.) and Jap SMITH were my most memorable teachers' she recalls. She remembers the Darby school because she says: 'There were seven or eight Harper children snrolled, along with COX, JOHNSON, and ATWOOD children.' Mrs. McMANIS recalls helping with the farm chores, planting and hoeing corn. Her two brothers and sister are now deceased.
'My mother had two sons and two daughters, and I have two sons and two daughters, including Mrs. Edna WARING and Charles Arnold McMANIS, both of Columbus; and Ernest McMANIS and Mrs. Lelia SHEWARD of Wellston. Lelia's twin sister died at the age of nine weeks.
Mrs. McMANIS and her husband were married one wet and snowy night, April 3, 1909. 'I remember it well, we walked in the rain and snow to the home of Justice of Peace Charlie MORRISON in Dundas who was at a belling. He did not arrive home until after 10 p.m. to marry us.'
Mr. and Mrs. McMANIS have six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A loyal church member, Mrs. McMANIS was first baptized when she was 12 years of age, at Shiloh church, on the Hamden-Allensville road.
When she was 24 she was baptized again, at Bethel church on Rt. 93 between Hamden and Dundas, the church Mr. and Mrs. McMANIS attended for years. They walked five miles to Bethel church.
Now she attends the Church of Christ in Wellston, where the pastor is Carson Patterson, and his congregation is completing a new brick structure on Minnesota Avenue, just a stone's throw from the McMANIS home. Mr. and Mrs. McMANIS can now just walk across the street to their church.
Blessed with an excellent memory, Mrs. McMANIS says her health is 'pretty good.' She does her own cooking and housework. In her spare time, she pieces quilts and sews dresses.
'When Elmer and I were married, he was working as the night pumper at the Dundas pump house. We went to housekeeping in a house belonging to Mr. Ed WATERS. At that time, my husband was getting $20 a month wages. We paid $4.00 a month rent, and $5.00 a month on our furniture and got our groceries at Henry WOOLWEAVER's store and paid all our bills and had some money left' she recalls. Later Elmer was the day boss at the pump house and Albert KIRKENDALL was the night pumper.
'In the fall we moved to Wellston and my husband worked at Milton Furnace. We lived in the Milton lot by the railroad. The engines would stop in front of our house and soot would come in the house all over everthing, so we moved back to Dundas and Elmer worked at the McArthur Brick Co. plant.
'We bought a three-room house from Frank RIFFLE and made the last payment about a month before Christmas. Two weeks later the house burned down, and we bought the house next to it from Henry CARR. Later we sold that house to Willard WATSON, and purchased a lot from M. A. BARSTOW and built a house and outbuilding, later selling it to George PECK, and returned to Wellston and bought our present home in 1936 at 516 W. B. Street, and have lived here ever since.'
Continuing her recollections, Mrs. McMANIS says: 'Elmer and I were baptized at Bethel Church of Christ in 1908 and were married April 3, 1909. We attended Bethel until June 21, 1956 when Robert PAGE came here and started the Church of Christ at the home of my daughter, Lelia SHEWARD, on A Street on Sunday afternoon. Later, at night, services were held in our yard, with Mr. PAGE preaching from our front porch, with people from Bethel, Sciotoville and Wellston attending. Mr. PAGE's mother and I went to Bethel church together when we were younger, and our children played together and grew up together.'
'Our church first got its own church in October 1956 with Evangelist E.L. Flannery, Sciotoville, the speaker. We continued to meet in rented buildings until 1957 when the property at the corner of West B and Minnesota Avenue was remodeled, and six years later, enlarged. Information from Biography:
"Edward JAYJOHN of Puritan is a tall, handsome man who looks much younger than his 80 years. He's a lifelong resident of Vinton County, and is a retired coal miner. He was born in Clinton Township, in a Lincoln Furnace company house June 4, 1885, son of Erastus and Mary HAYBURN JAYJOHN, one of a family of 14 children, seven boys and seven girls. His father was a charcoal furnace worker and coal miner.
With his sisters and brothers, Ed JAYJOHN attended the old Hagerty school at Hanging Rock; the Eliza school near Wellston, and the Hayburn school at Potts' Chapel. His family lived near Wellston for two years. His teachers included George McCARTY, Minnie McLAUGHLIN, Roy BOLIN and Les CALVIN. Among his classmates were the EBY and CANTER children, and Elza MARKS.
When he was just a young lad, Ed JAYJOHN started in the coal mining trade, working with his father in the old Wainwright mine. 'We got 51c a ton, about $1.21 per day,' he recalls. He worked all his life in the coal mines of Vinton and Jackson counties, at Fluhart No. 2 and 3; at Sperry No. 6 and 12; at Elk Fork No. 1; in mines in the Lincoln area; at the New York Coal co. at Oreton; at the Puritan Brick Coal Co. Mine in Jackson County.
He is the father of six children, three of whom are deceased. His living children include Nelson and Clarence of Puritan, and Mrs. Gladys SEYMOUR who lives on the Hamden-Allensville road. He has six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mr. JAYJOHN, whose health is good, attends Sunday School at the Free Will Baptist Church at Puritan. He reads without glasses, has a good memory for the past and is acutely aware of the present. He is proud of the garden that he helped his sons plant and till.
The JAYJOHN house at Puritan used to be a company house for the Puritan Brick Co. and is across Rt. 160 from the Huston Rest Home. In the rear of the home is a winding creek, a good bottomland, and beyond a beautifully wooded hillside. Like all coal miners, he had some narrow escapes from injury and death while working. . ."

Come to my beautiful garden
And see in perfect bloom
The flower you loved so dearly
And thought that I plucked too soon.
Then you will know my reason,
Though you know it not today,
Why in his promising manhood,
I took your loved one away.

"Life is a leaf of paper white,
Upon which each of us may write
His word or two - and then comes night.
Sylvester, son of Josiah and Lenora BARTHOL McMANUS was born near Eagle Furnace, January 15, 1866, and died at Oreton, Ohio, October 6, 1940, aged 74 years, 8 months, 21 days.
He was one of a family of 13 children and was preceded in death by four sisters and five brothers.
He was married to Ida May HABORN, February 10, 1901, and to their union five children were born. Iva Ree, Willis Calvin, Flossie May, Homer Ray, and Mildred Ocel.
